The eYMHFA Wales course teaches adults how to provide Mental Health First Aid to young people and can be completed from the convenience of your home or office, without the need to travel and at your own pace through interactive modules and webinars online.
The eYMHFA Wales course teaches adults who have frequent contact with adolescents, such as parents, guardians, school staff, sport coaches and youth workers, how to assist adolescents who are developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis.
The YMHFA course teaches adults how to assist adolescents who are developing any of the following mental health problems, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis:
• Depression
• Anxiety problems
• Psychosis
• Substance use problems
• Eating Disorders
• Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
• Non-suicidal self-injury
• Panic attacks
• Traumatic events
• Severe psychotic states
• Severe effects from alcohol or other drug use
• Aggressive behaviours
Any adult who comes into contact with young people in any capacity. This could be as part of your employment, a volunteer role or as a parent or carer for examples. Mental illnesses often start in adolescence or early adulthood, and it is important to detect problems early to ensure the young person is properly treated and supported.
The eYMHFA comprises of online learning and webinars. There are online modules to be completed before attending webinar 1, and then further modules to complete before webinar 2. The webinars are 3 hours long and the purpose of these is to consolidate the learning from the online modules and to discuss any questions or concerns that may arise from completing the online modules.
The structure of the eYMHFA is:
Module 1: Introduction to Mental Health:
Module 2: Depression
Module 3: Anxiety
Attend Webinar 1 where you will be given the access code to complete Modules 4, 5 & 6.
Module 4: Eating Disorders
Module 5: Psychosis
Module 6: Substance Use
Attend Webinar 2 where you will be given the final access code to complete the course and download your certificate.
Yes, once you have completed the course, you are a fully trained Mental Health First Aider and your certificate is valid for 3 years. After this period, there is a refresher course we can provide to enable you to keep your Mental Health First Aider title.
We also offer an accredited Mental Health First Aid qualification. Following completion of a Mental Health First Aid course, there is a workbook to complete that is assessed by your Sapphire Minds trainer. Mental Health First Aid Wales courses are accredited by Agored Cymru in partnership with Adult Learning Wales.
